Lost crank on I-78 at Hellertown - Insurance advice needed

OK - I've been building my Frankenbike all season and finally got it ready for it's inaugural ride in preparation to chase down Jason at Jordan creek. We were heading away this weekend so I spend the time talking the ol' lady into the funpass for not only saturday but Monday too. The only trick is that the bike has to ride on the back of the car - no room inside because of the kids (gotta make concessions somewhere). The last thing I do before heading out the door is install the cranks - big ring and all (Jason is fast remember!) - ready to roll. Now, sitting in 2+hours of traffic caught between two exits only 10 miles from the house, the guy behind me has some sort of lapse and hits me.

Wouldn't have been too much of a problem except for the bike being on the car. The crank pushes through the bumper (which just got repared last week after the wife backed into someone - paint is still soft). So we start doing the info exchange while rolling down the interstate and go on our way. We stop to get something to eat and my son checks out the bike and asks what happened to my pedal. Turns out the one crank arm got broken off while the other got jammed into the bumper. So not only do I have to deal with the car but now I need a new crank and pedals. And the topper, my daughter gets food poisoning.

So what's the deal with insurance coverage. Would they cover the damage to the bike as well? Would it be his insurance or mine for the bike? The biggest thing I'm worried about is telling the insurance about the bike to begin with. Does using a bike carrier somehow negate the coverage? Especially since the bike caused most of the damage to the car.

Anyone else have to deal with damage for external bike carriers? Next time the family stays home....... Wink
