When you encounter a wet area in the center of the trail, the proper and responsible thing to do as a trail user (hiker, cyclist, equestrian, whatever) is to ride straight through it.
This image (taken at a local park over the weekend) provides a vivid illustration of what happens when users attempt to avoid the wet. There's nothing good to say about this image -- it's just plain ugly. And, it's completely avoidable.
Please don't be shy about nicely explaining this proper technique to other trail users.
While avoiding muddy, "rutt-able" trails after bad weather is always best — anyone who's into being in the woods should take no issue with getting a little mud on themselves as the pass through one of these wet areas.
Thanks,
Doug
