Every two years, several VMB members commit themselves to this fund-raising ride. They spend a week away from home and sleep in gymnasiums -- averaging between 500-600 miles in the saddle over some demanding terrain. Prior to this, they attempt to raise the funds necessary to participate. This commonly includes anything from a letter-writing campaign to showing up with buckets to collect change from shoppers while they spin on their bikes outside of Wal-Mart.
I know there are plenty of cycling events out there that benefit good causes. I would offer that this one is unique because of its home-town impact: In 2007, these riders raised over $150,000. 85% of those funds were donated to the Lehigh Valley Unit of the American Cancer Society and 15% were donated to Dream Come True.
Also worth noting that the riders who participate have all been impacted by cancer. Many have lost several family members. Each rider needs to raise a $1,000 dollars this year and the group goal is $150,000.
If anybody from VMB is interested in making a donation, maybe we can figure out a way to split the contributions among the VMB members participating so we can help each meet their goal. If not, just choose someone -- it ALL goes to a good cause.
The members I know to be participating this year are Don Kelly (donxfive), Greg Morrison (mtbsailor) and Eric Rigler (E Rock). (Let me know if I missed someone)
Thanks so much for reading. You can learn more about the ride here.
Sincerely,
Doug
